The story

Connecting the world one gadget at a time.

I believe in the power of connection — between devices, people and the environment. That’s why each gadget is thoughtfully designed, easy to use, and crafted to help you stay connected wherever you are.

Every UkieLab display follows the same rule: show one thing well, on a screen that looks like paper, with no app and no subscription. Thank you for supporting a small business as it grows into the next generation of quiet, useful screens.

How a device gets made

One person, four steps, no factory.

  1. 01 It starts with an itch

Every device begins as something worth glancing at: the tide before a fishing trip, the week’s schedule for the family, the weather without unlocking a phone.

  2. 02 Board and firmware

I design the electronics around an ESP32 microcontroller and write the firmware myself — the part that fetches the data, draws the screen and sleeps between refreshes.

  3. 03 Printed, not molded

Cases are made in small batches here in Watchung, so a hinge or a magnet pocket can be improved the same week someone points it out.

  4. 04 Tested and packed by hand

Each unit is flashed, joined to Wi-Fi and checked on its own screen before it’s packed with a printed guide. If something isn’t right, you write to the person who built it.

Good to know

Six things about the devices I build.

Reads like paperE-ink is reflective: no backlight, no glare, and the brighter the room, the better it looks.
Power only when the picture changesBetween refreshes the screen draws almost nothing — that’s why a UkieLab display can run for weeks on its battery.
No app, no account, no subscriptionYou join the device to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi from a phone browser once. After that it fetches its own data.
Straight from the sourceWeather comes from Apple Weather, tides from NOAA, calendars from iCloud or Google — no middleman cloud.
Charge it when you rememberUSB-C charging and a 3000–4000 mAh battery, depending on the model; leave it plugged in or let it roam.
Made to be servicedFirmware keeps improving, parts can be replaced, and support comes from the person who built the device.

Where they live

Kitchens, workshops, boats, offices.

Most UkieLab displays end up on a fridge door or a shelf at home — but a quiet, always-on screen fits many more places: a workshop, a boat, an office, a classroom. If you have a place in mind, I’d like to hear about it.
